Caldas from Reis to Padrón

• Km 0. Caldas de Reis(All services)

You have to get out of front, without loss, by the rustic San Roque. It ends up in the chapel of the saint of the same name, patron of Caldas de Reis whose festivities are celebrated in mid-August. At this point we went out to the N-550, but we left it 150 meters past a runway that was born on the right. A peaceful rural section begins with the nearby presence of the Berne River but afflicted by a viaduct. However, it soon falls into oblivion thanks to several stains of carballos and eucalyptus. After several houses of the small nucleus of Lavandeira (Km 1,5), which we left to the right, the route remains in invaluable ascent waiting for some more annoying ramps that eventually lead to the parish of Carracedo, at the foot of the N-550, where there are a couple of restaurants, bakery and pharmacy. We crossed the road and climbed to the church of Santa Mariña, the epicenter of the parish of Carracedo and located in the place of O Campo.

After the church we cross a nucleus of houses corresponding to Gorgullón and after several crosses we go down to the N-550, which we cross again to the height of Casalderrique. At the top of 34,584 km to Santiago we fired from the Concello de Caldas de Reis and accessed the Valga, going to a track that advances parallel to the AP-9. The Camino crosses later in the heart of Casal de Eirigo, of the parish of Setecoros and where there is also a bar (Km 8.1). The Casal is a few meters to the left and the Camino continues again next to the highway, which we leave later on a paved runway leading to the place of O Pino.

The population and services are next to the N-550, about 60 meters to the left of our itinerary. Since 2011 there is also a hostel of pilgrims of the Xunta. On Mojón 32,410 to Santiago we turn to the right and descend on a runway that slowly enters the tupid Monte Albor by grinding into the river Valga. As we leave the vegetation we cross the river and enter San Miguel de Valga next to the neoclassical church of the 18th century.

The disconnected rural nuclei of Cimadevila and Fontelo follow San Miguel. After the latter we walk down a paved road to a track that leads to the road of Regadío, a street that welcomes us to the place of Condide, of the Concello de Pontecesures (Km 14,3). A kilometer later, already in the Infesta district, we crossed the road heading to A Estrada.

Later is the hostel of Pontecesures, de la Xunta and opened in January 2012. The route continues from front to St. Julian's church. It still retains some Romanesque canisters (Km 15,8). Next comes the diversion to the pilgrims hostel of Herbón, located 3 kilometers from this point. It is located in a dependency of the Franciscan monastery, the cradle of the beloved peppers of Padrón, and is managed by the Galician Association of Friends of the Camino de Santiago, the poster that is in the detour itself alerts if it is open or not.

• Km 16. Diversion Herbón Pilgrims Hostel

Towards Padrón, the Camino saves just after a level step to reach the bridge over the Ulla River in Pontecesures. The bridge, heir of a Roman, has changed its physiognomy, first in the 12th century, then in 1790 and later in 1911 and 1956. Just before crossing the bridge we are joined by pilgrims who chose the spiritual variant.

When crossing the river we say goodbye to the province of Pontevedra to enter the province of A Coruña. After the bridge it seems that we are already in the same Padron, but not so, still more than 2 kilometers to the hostel. By Puente Padrón we reached the Sar River, the same by which the disciples of Santiago landed with the remains of the Apostle in the year 42 or 44 of our era. A long line parallel to this river leads to the Abastos market and the walk of the Espolón de Padrón, where we receive the monument to the Nobel Prize in Literature Camilo José Cela.

At the other end of the Paseo is the statue in tribute to the writer Rosalía de Castro and the church of Santiago. There is only one stone left from the Romanesque temple. The present church is in the middle of the 19th century and replaced a Gothic church. Below the main altar is the stone, or Roman stone, that served to tie the boat where the remains of Santiago arrived and that gave name to this locality. We turn next to the church to cross the river and climb up the costanilla of Carmen to the convent of the same name and the public hostel of pilgrims.
