Stage from Elizondo to Berroeta

• Km 0. Elizondo(All services)

In the capital of the Baztán Valley, the Camino passes by the 19th century facade of the City Hall and emanates Jaime Urrutia Street. Packed with small shops, on one of the facades we can see the plate showing how far the water level reached in the legendary rust of 1913. Also in this area would be the old pilgrimage hospital mentioned by Father Germán:“between the Camino Real and the Agua Mayor”. At the intersection with the Plaza de Pedro Zuga, turn right and cross the Baztán River, which bathes the entire valley and is renamed the Bidasoa River from Oronoz Mugaire. Turn left and run parallel to the stream by Braulio Iriarte. After the Baztan Berri (New Baztán) square, of more modern buildings, we take a road and a paved section to reach the neighborhood of Huarte, in the term of Lekaroz, next to the youth hostel (Km 1.7)

• Km 1.7. Hostels in Lekaroz

The church of Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo, inaugurated in 1891, still keeps alive the memory of the Capuchin college of Lekaroz, already demolished. The area annexed to the temple provides for the construction of a Business Campus. We continue through the quiet NA-4404, which saves the river and reaches the square known as the ‘bounce’ of Irurita, where we find a bakery and an ultramarine. On the other side of the road is the 15th century Jaureguia Palace of Cabo de Armory, which we can visit any day of the week (see observations). The population is the second most populous in the valley and also has a privileged civil architecture.

We advanced towards Berroeta through the NA-2540 for over half a kilometer. So we went out on the left to take a path that snaps a good stretch of road. The price is the most pronounced cost of the day, which extends more than enough until reaching Zigaurre, one of the neighborhoods of Ziga (Km 4.9). At the foot of the road we can see the hermitage of San Andrés, with an unporticar atrium accessed by side stairs. We resumed the road march to take another shortcut when we reached the curve (it is worth continuing by road and passing through the viewpoint over the valley of Baztán, the views are amazing and then we can continue the asphalt until we link higher with the Camino). We chose to take the detour to Ziga.

• Km 6.2. Ziga

The itinerary passes from tiptoes to the population, but we can enter to see the parish of San Lorenzo, of the 15th century and nicknamed the Baztan Cathedral. The temple, blacksmith, classic and without ornaments, was raised in reddish sandstone sillares and highlights inside the largest baroque altarpiece and several paintings of the same style.We left the village to return to the road. Three hundred meters after passing by the fountain of the Priest, we take a road by the left wing that passes by the ruins of the chapel of the Most Holy Trinity (Km 7,9).

On the right, across the road, we see Aniz, the smallest population in the valley. During these days, during the autumn and winter months, we will probably have seen in the grasslands a conical structure of ferns. They are goals (heaps), which are handmade around a beech pole. Dry ferns, above all before, were used as bed for cattle and later as fertilizer. The Jacobean path enters and leaves the road once more and finally reaches Berroeta, under Mount Abartan of 1095 meters. The pilgrim hostel is located in the plaza, is the old school located right above the pediment (Km 9,7).
